Ο Αρσένιος, με μεγάλο κίνδυνο της ζωής του, σώζει ένα συστρατιώτη του που πληγώθηκε στη μάχη. Όλοι θαυμάζουν το θάρρος του και προσπαθούν να καταλάβουν πως δεν χτυπήθηκε από τα τόσα πυρά που δέχτηκε στην προσπάθειά του να μεταφέρει τον πληγωμένο στρατιώτη. Η Ευλογία δέχεται μια μεγάλη έκπληξη. Ο Αρσένιος επιστρέφει στο σπίτι και της λέει ότι απολύθηκε από τον στρατό. Η χαρά της δεν θα κρατήσει για πολύ, διότι της ανακοινώνει ότι θα φύγει για το Άγιον Όρος. Τον παρακαλεί να μείνει για λίγο αλλά ο Αρσένιος φεύγει την επόμενη ημέρα. Η συγκίνησή του είναι μεγάλη όταν μπαίνει στο περιβόλι της Παναγίας. Καταφεύγει στον πατέρα Κύριλλο, έναν σπουδαίο πνευματικό, ο οποίος του δίνει τις πρώτες συμβουλές για τον μοναχισμό. Λίγο καιρό μετά, δέχεται γράμμα από τον πατέρα του που του ζητά να επιστρέψει αμέσως για να τον βοηθήσει στα χωράφια και να φτιάξουν την προίκα της μικρής του αδελφής, της Χριστίνας. Ο Αρσένιος βρίσκεται σε μεγάλο δίλημμα. Καταφεύγει και πάλι στον πατέρα Κύριλλο και ζητάει τη συμβουλή του.
