Οι ξεριζωμένοι από την Καππαδοκία γιορτάζουν την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου μακριά από το χωριό τους, με μια υπαίθρια λειτουργία. Φτάνουν στον Πειραιά στις 14 Σεπτεμβρίου, περιμένοντας να βρουν τη μάνα Ελλάδα που θα τους αγκαλιάσει, συναντούν όμως πάρα πολλές δυσκολίες και προβλήματα. Ο πατέρας του μικρού Αρσενίου, που είναι ο πρόεδρος της κοινότητας, προσπαθεί με την καθοδήγηση του γέροντα Αρσενίου να κρατάει ισορροπίες και να λύνει τα προβλήματα. Ο γέροντας Αρσένιος προλέγει ότι θα πάνε σε ένα νησί και ότι αυτός θα «κοιμηθεί» εκεί σε σαράντα μέρες. Την επόμενη μέρα τους στέλνουν στην Κέρκυρα. Εκεί μένουν προσωρινά στο κάστρο της πόλης.
